There are many who believe that success in network marketing is based on setting goals, doing daily affirmations and visualizations a great company and great products etc.

But they are simply WRONG. Perhaps not intentionally, but wrong nevertheless. Lots of companies have great products and many of their distributors are not earning the kind of incomes the expected …if any.

There is a problem in MLM training. For example:

A very successful network marketer earning about $60,000 a month heard about me and my reputation so she brought me in to speak to one of her groups. There were about 1,500 of her distributors there. That morning I gave one of my very best performances I have ever given and they responded with a long and rousing standing ovation. They loved the message and insights I shared with them.

After the morning ended, this woman and her husband whisked me off to a private meeting over lunch.  It was clear she was agitated and seemed upset. Once the meal was served and the waitress stopped her frequent visits to the table this powerhouse of a woman got right to the point.

She said, “We are very upset at what you taught our people today!”

A bit shocked, I asked, “Why? They loved me!”

She quickly stated that she didn’t like the idea that I had told them all to stop doing the very things she had been telling them to do for the past seven years which included, goal setting, daily affirmations, visualizing outcomes and reading a myriad of motivational self-help books.

I am pretty bold and fearless when I have the truth as my foundation so I leaned over the table and looked into her eyes and asked kindly, but firmly, the following question: “Are those the things you did to reach the level of success that you now enjoy?”

I shall never forget what happened next.

This woman is one of the finest human beings you will ever meet. She loves truth and has a great deal of integrity. Here’s how she responded.  As soon as I asked her that question she turned and looked at her husband for about 10 seconds….neither said anything…then she turned back to me and quietly shook her head and then said, “No.”

That didn’t surprise me in the least. You see I knew her story of success and it didn’t include any of those things.

I then shared with her something that was quite an eye opener to her.

I said, “When you stand in front of your organization and tell them that if they will do what you have told them to do, they will gain the success that you enjoy and that they seek. They hey not only accept what you say as gospel truth but embrace it enthusiastically. With great gusto and total mental commitment they set about trying to do all the things you suggested.”

“But,” I told her “here is the rub…when a few months, or worse yet, a year or two has gone by and they still don’t have the success they hoped for …. They don’t question you or the ideas for success that you suggested. After all you have complete, undeniable credibility.

“Who do they question? They question themselves. They give themselves negative labels they don’t deserve and draw terrible conclusions about themselves …like I must not have what it takes or I am a failure. Then they get very discouraged, give up and wither and die away. Sure they may keep coming to meetings for social interaction is, indeed, one of the great benefits and attractions that people experience and love in network marketing…but do they earn much money? The answer is almost always a sad “No”.

If this has happened to you, and I’ll bet it has, you can change it if you want to with the truths you will learn from me.

First….to stop this from happening to you make sure you don’t fall into the trap of believing that the standard things taught for success in MLM such as goal setting, affirmations, reading books or listening to audio programs suggested by a big money earner or upline is going to bring you success.  They won’t.

There are only four things you must do to make money in network marketing. Assuming you have a good company and a good product if you do these four things with the right attitude and confidence… and do them consistently …you will make all the money you want. So when you hear anything other than what I have listed please understand that what you are being taught by these well meaning big money earners it is merely their way of trying to motivate you to do these four things consistently.

1)      Believe in and use the product(s)and get others to use them

2)      Do powerful and proper prospecting…a lot. Focus on finding business builders.

3)      Recruit those who are interested in making money this way. Turn the rest into wholesale or retail consumers if you can.

4)      Teach the new recruit what you know about the company, the product(s) and keep them focused on powerful and proper prospecting and recruiting too.

Then……..

Repeat, Repeat, Repeat.

Training over.  The mechanics of doing network marketing are really very simple aren’t they?

Second…take a close, in-depth and truthful look at your real motivations for doing an MLM business. I call them Core Desires. For example, if your love of the product(s) is the real reason you are interested but you don’t really like the business side where you must prospect acknowledge that truth and don’t give yourself any negative labels. You are not stupid. You do have talent and, in time, you could learn to do and become what it takes … if you really wanted to.

If you aren’t doing what it takes, if you aren’t getting the results you want, if you aren’t being the kind of person it takes just acknowledge that you just don’t want it badly enough to consistently do what it takes including making changes in yourself.   That’s all.

If your are truly motivated from within to do the business by one or more Core Desires and are willing to change if necessary to become what you must become then see steps 1 through 4 above and you will begin to experience the joy of success and the profit that is there in network marketing.

A very big income earner in network marketing was discussing with me her reason for success but when she told it to me it was clear that she did not have a clue how to quantify it.

We were talking about whether self-help books were the secret to success. She didn’t think so. She asked me if I had read a specific book about how to be successful in MLM and I told her that I had. It is quite a popular book.

She quickly retorted, “Well I haven’t. Well actually…I did read the first chapter which was all about how important it is to discover your “WHY.” (The book doesn’t tell you how to do that by the way. It assumes the reader knows their “Why” and most don’t.)

She related to me that while reading that first chapter she became exquisitely and vividly clear about her “WHY”. It had to do with having more time to spend with her precious children. She then made this startling statement:

“I never read any more of that book. I put it down and just went and did it.”  At the time we were visiting, her income was in the high 6 figures and only took 5 or 6 years to generate that kind of cash flow in her MLM business.

Everyone she tells her story to wants to know what the “it” was that she went and did. They are ready with pen and pencil to write down whatever she says because they’re going to go and do it!

What was the “It” that she went and did?

That’s the problem with most successful upline. They can’t clearly define what the “it “ is so guess what they do?  They fall back on the standard techniques taught which includes goal setting, affirmations, reading this or that book, etc. but that is NOT what they did to get where they are!

What the heck is the “IT”!  Somebody tell me, PLEASE!

Well here is what it is NOT. It is NOT great products with incredible testimonies that are sometimes nothing short of miraculous. It is NOT a lucrative compensation plan or wonderful, attention getting, company story. These things ARE, indeed, important BUT if these were all it took to become successful everyone would be making money…and most are not.  Therefore the conclusion must be that these things alone aren’t enough.

THEN WHAT IS IT????

Are you ready for the truth? Are you ready for that breakthrough that has been holding you back for months or years?

OK, here it is…It’s the ability to build an organization of distributors who are doing three things 1) using the products 2) getting others to use them and 3) getting others to build their own organization.  DUH!

If you don’t learn to do ALL three of those things you are destined to be a happy, healthy, pretty or thin, product user without much, if any, income from those great products that you know and love so much. You will be what I call a professional meeting attendee.

The question now needs to be… not what do I need to DO? Everyone KNOWS what to do…. (See 1 through 4 above) the question needs to be what do I need to BE or BECOME to build a large profitable organization with a lot of business builders?

I have had an organization of over 50,000 month people so what I am sharing with you is not theory. I saw a single mother earning $30,000 a month a nurse earning $10,000 a month and others with seemingly far more skill and time earning NOTHING!

I had to find out why.

Why was it that my sponsor never got past a thousand or two a month level, and I went on to become the top income earner in the company earning $80,000? We all had the same opportunity, the same comp plan and products but those who earn serious money had something else going for them in addition to what the company offered them.

What was that something else? I soon discovered that it had everything to do with what was going on between their ears and in their hearts.

And the beauty of what I have learned over the years is that we all already have that “something else” and, in fact, are already successfully using it in many different ways.  Some enjoy it in full blossom and for others it is in embryo…but nevertheless it IS there and CAN be developed and applied in network marketing.

You must have certain attitudes and characteristics in order to earn big money in MLM. To me big income in network marketing is any steady income over $10,000 a month.

Here are some of these essential characteristics attitudes that all successful network marketers have or must get:

·       You MUST discover your Core Desires (your real “Why”) which unleashes your Conquering Force so you will be able to demolish all barriers and obstacles in your way. My tape program can help you do this. An old Welsh proverb says, “The hand will not reach for what the heart does not long for.” What do you really long for? You must know or you will not excel. This is why I wrote, “How to Use the Conquering Force within You”, which tells you how to discover your Core Desires.

·       You MUST believe you are worth listening to. That you have credibility. Today. Now. Not when you are earning a big check for you will never get the big check until you have this paradigm about YOU.

·       You MUST believe that YOU are capable of leading others to financial success even though you haven’t done so yet yourself.

·       You MUST talk confidently about the business not just the products. BOTH are crucial to generating income. Most only talk confidently about the products. That is not wrong but it is only half of the business.

·       You MUST learn to do proper, powerful prospecting so you can sponsor some business builders. My internationally famous Learn To Earn audio program shows you exactly how to do that.

Success is not OUT THERE in some company, product or success technique. Success is an inside job so that is why I titled my best selling book The DNA of Success. It focuses on the inside building block – the DNA if you will — for ALL success. It is the root cause of all achievement. Once you master that you can apply it to anything your heart desires and you will not only excel but also have a lot of fun doing it.

I know what you are saying in your mind right now.

But I don’t have the necessary skills. But I am shy. But I don’t have the time. But I don’t have enough money. But I am not comfortable in front of people. But I don’t know how. But I have no confidence. But I don’t know what to say. But I am JUSTA single mother, JUSTA nurse, JUSTA secretary, JUSTA carpenter, JUSTA waitress, JUSTA real estate agent, JUSTA plumber, JUSTA heating and air conditioning guy, JUSTA doctor with no business sense, JUSTA bellman.

Here is the truth — You are JUSTA human being….and a human being has unlimited potential so don’t ever say you are “JUSTA” anything. What do you want to be? That’s the question to ask.

By the way…. I listed those professions because I personally know people from each of those who are now earning a six-figure income in network marketing. Hmmmm. What do they have that you need?

They know their Core Desires and have ALL of the above characteristics.

One guy told me with great heaviness and discouragement in his voice that, “I must not be cut out for this network marketing or I would have had more success by now.”

My immediate response was, “Well, Charles, when you were cut out, what were you cut out for?”  You see we are all cut out of the same cloth so to speak.  We are all human beings with the ability to learn whatever we want. We can add needed characteristics to our personalities or take away things that are holding us back. We can knock off the rough edges so we can roll smoothly…. Make a lot of money and be free …. or not! It is your choice.

Or do you want to help people own their LIVES?  By helping those people you will own yours!

If you are looking to equip and build a person no matter the out come.  That is Sponsoring.  So tell me what is more appealing to you? Sponsoring or Recruiting?“

It’s an extremely important question, and over the past 10 years, I’ve come to my own personal conclusion on this topic.
 
The first thing we should recognize is that there is no ONE right way when it comes to sponsoring and recruiting.

Everyone has their own style and approach, and I’ll share mine with you over the next few days. 

But first, let’s set the stage…

I was as bad as you could be when it came to recruiting for almost six years.

Calling me shy would have been a massive understatement. The thought of picking up the phone and talking to a lead made me physically tremble.

I’d sit at my desk, staring at the phone for hours. I’d make endless trips to Office Depot to buy that one last supply I needed to ensure my desk was organized and ready for business.

I’d wait until I heard that next training call, or to make sure my sponsor was available for a 3-way if needed before my fingers every touched the dial-pad.

It’s like trying to sum up the courage to call the girl you like in grade-school – but now you’ve got to do it every day for a living.

I was my sponsors’ worst night-mare because they knew I had the talent and ability to achieve incredible things, but I always let my own fears and demons get in the way.

If you haven’t been in that position yet… Where you just want to stick your hands out and shake someone senselessly because they just can’t snap out of their own mental prison… You will.

Everyone needs to be in a constant state improvement, because if you haven’t figured it out yet, this industry is utterly ruthless and will expose every weakness you have to the world. That’s the nature of entrepreneurialism.

Now for most people, prospecting and recruiting is a completely emotional event that driven by fear.

Fear of rejection… What if this person calls me an idiot, yells at me or hangs up? What if my friends make fun of me? What if I get my upline on the phone for a follow up call and they never show?

Fear of failure… I spent my last dime on these leads, what if I can’t sponsor someone? I told my upline I’d be his best distributor this month. What will he think of me if I don’t produce at all? I told my family I’d make it happen no matter what it takes… What if I fail them?

Fear of success… What if I do sponsor someone? I don’t know what to do with them and I could let them down. It would be all my fault. What if I build a large organization and they ask me to start leading people or speaking in public? What if my friends resent me for making more money than them?

Yes, this industry is ruthless. In the world of capitalistic entrepreneurialism, it always has been, and always will be the survival of the fittest.

Believe it or not, that’s one of the greatest gifts you’ll ever receive during your life. 
 
It will allow you to truly see yourself for who you are – where you’re strong and where you’re weak, which then gives you the ability to transform yourself into who you want to ultimately become.

The sky is the limit – IF – you’re willing to pay the price.

My fears gripped me and controlled my life for years. I was at their mercy and my life was truly hell because of it.

After graduating from college, I packed up everything I owned into a small pickup truck and drove from Texas to San Diego California.

All I had was a dream and a successful upline mentor named Stu who was willing to show me the ropes.

At this point, I had been in this industry for five years and never sponsored a distributor or customer outside my family tree.

Now it was “do or die” time. School was over. I was on my own. It felt like my entire future was riding on this trip.

I found the only apartment in town that I could afford and unpacked the few belongings I had… My desk, computer, books, bike, bed, guitar, phone, and a lamp. 
 
My sponsor and I had met a few days before and things were looking up. We had an incredible marketing plan in place and all I had to do is follow up with the leads they were going to generate.

A massive radio campaign had been produced, meetings were being held in town each week, and I had secured a strategic position within the group that had the potential to put me in the millionaire category within a year or two.

I fell asleep that night determined and confident. Things were going to be different this time. Little did I know we were hours away from waking up to a brave new world.

The date was September 10th, 2001.

We all know what happened next. Our big plans disappeared over night, the investors left, and people did their best to deal with the massive question mark hanging over the entire world.

As you can imagine, it’s hard to sell optimism and opportunity during such tragedy. Business was the last thing on anyone’s mind.

I toughed it out working for $8.00/hr at Best Buy selling computers. The business never took off and I never conquered my fear of prospecting.

Four months later I packed everything up and moved back to Texas. I had failed myself on all accounts but one…

For some sick reason that most people, (other than you), will never understand, I wasn’t ready to give up. I couldn’t spend the rest of my life working for someone else, and still look at myself in the mirror every morning.

I had to conquer my fear of the phone and I had to do something different this time if it was going to happen.

I came to realize that people are funny creatures. Most of us are willing to do things for other people that we’re completely unwilling to do for ourselves.

If I hired you to call leads everyday for $30,000 per month, would you do it?
Of course you would.

Then why are you still unwilling and maybe even afraid to do it for yourself right now?

Having a “job” or assignment takes the responsibility off of us. We’re willing to make those calls now because “we” are not the ones getting rejected… It’s the company we work for.

We can separate our ego from the process in a job.

I took advantage of that and made my first dive into the corporate world as a physician recruiter.

It was a strategic move…

My “job”?

Cold call 200-300 doctor’s offices per day and try to get past the gatekeeper to speak to the physician.

I wasn’t able to make those calls for myself, but I made them for my boss.

Within five days I was a completely new person.

My fear of the phone was finally dead.

Months later I’d use the same tactic to conquer my fear of personal selling. I took a position as an outside sales person for a wire-less broadband start-up.

My job was to get into the big Dallas hi-rises and knock on doors, starting from the top-floor, working my way down until I made it through or was kicked out by security.

The plan had worked, and the old Mike Dillard was dead.

Months later I would meet my first real sponsoring mentor, Mark Wieser.
With Mark’s help, I would go on to build my first real organization, personally sponsoring dozens of distributors in months.

If you read this article from a perspective of negative doom and gloom, you are reading it exactly the wrong way. Read it again.

An important survey finding buried deep in the article:

“three of four in the nationwide poll ranked financial security as important — and only 12% said they felt secure in their finances these days.”

Do you realize what that says? Have you really thought about those statistics?

What I see is that the vast majority of Americans ( and certainly those in other countries ) want financial security, but less than one of every eight people surveyed actually feel financially secure today.

You hit the nail right on the head when you said that if you’re reading the article from a ‘doom-gloom’ perspective, you’re not really ‘seeing’ what’s being said.  What’s interesting to note is that  when people were asked about their level of happiness, their lowest levels of happiness coincided with bad economic news.  I find that really interesting, because it’s all about perspective. 

News is just news (but usually there’s nothing ‘new’ about it).  Whether we deem it ‘good’ or ‘bad’ is all based upon our perception and pre-conceived notions.  As Usana associates we see economic downturn as a huge opportunity, but what we need to be skilled at, especially now, is to help others to see what we see.  And contrary to popular belief, it’s easier to do this right now. 

As Usana associates we must help others to see that what they’re currently doing or have done may not get them the American dream.  Help others to relinquish their hold on the need for a JOB and security and help them to get back to the American dream which is FREEDOM. 

An interesting note within the article: A study sponsored by Northwestern Mutual and being released today asked Americans to define “success.” Topping the list were spending time with family, having a good relationship with a spouse or partner, being healthy and maintaining a good work/life balance.

Hmm…sounds like Usana can definitely help in that aspect.  Most jobs will not help others to accomplish those aspects that people hold dear.  We’re at a pivitol point here and we’re poised with the best company, best opportunity and best products.  Other associates in other companies are hitting the pavement hard right now.  I get prospected almost everyday by some other company.  There’s a growing knowledge that ‘traditional means’ of making a living is not secure.  What are you doing to help change other’s lives?

They saw the doom and gloom but didn’t see the RAINBOW!!!   It is a chance I took and I have no regrets.  It is my personal liberty.

I had noted to LISTEN at the specific time frame in the video what the economic forecaster answered to the interviewer.  The question was “So what can Americans do in this economy?  What are the better careers/jobs?” 

HE said “ANYTHING to do with Health and Wellness.  Going Organic, anything green….” 

We already heard Paul Zane Pilzer say it…long ago.  I am glad we are in the right place at the right time.  People are very sensitive right now.  That doesn’t mean they should bury their heads in the sand.  Some don’t want to hear it.  BUT I will FIND THOSE that do!!!!  Not everyone is going to heed the advice from anyone.  We have a responsibility to show them that they must let go of FEAR….. and the ones that are open to it, are the ones we want.

I love this saying that my friend J’en El had as a tag line…

“I will do today what others WON’T, so tomorrow I can HAVE what others CAN’T.”
